Jazzthink is certainly not the only leadership development group using jazz to stimulate thinking about effective ways to lead these days. In our Quote of Note this month, we feature Michael Gold of Jazz Impact.

Quote of Note

Based in Minneapolis, businessman and bassist Michael Gold is one of North America's leading advocates for using jazz to inspire new thinking on business and management.

"Jazz is the only modern art form that has reached beyond itself in defining a system of collaborative improvisation. Jazz is the sound of people negotiating change. It's an international language for fusing design, manufacturing, and implementation into one multifaceted process. The tools jazz musicians use embody a tradition based on the principles of alignment, self-initiative, experimentation, and cross-functional understanding - principles that have become imperatives for business in the 21st century."

Thought Provoker of the Month

Jazz musicians often encapsulate wisdom in a few powerful words. Take, for example, sax great Charlie Parker. "Music," he said, "is simply melody, harmony, and rhythm. That's it!"

I've used a few more words than that in this month's Thought Provoker to pose some questions about how this framework might help you lead better in your organization.

"The opening exercise (asking people what they saw about great workplaces in the jazz performance) showed how simple, productive, and inspiring the jazz analogy can be. The qualities we discovered can now be taken back to our workplaces as a resource and an ideal to pursue."

Most of you know that in another aspect of my life and work I remain active as a Presbyterian minister, so I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone, along with their loved ones and colleagues, the richest blessings over the coming Christmas season. Whatever religious convictions you hold, it is a time for all of us to reflect with gratitude on the grace that fills our lives in so many unnoticed ways.

Seasons blessings, my friends.

Sincerely,
